Ghee                                                                                 1 tsp.

Oil                                                                                     1 tbsp.

  • Wash and soak any 5 dals of your choice for 4 hours. Here I have taken toor dal, moong dal, urad dal, whole moong and lobia.
  • Cook the dal in pressure cooker on medium flame for 3 whistles.
  • Heat a kadai on medium flame and add oil. Once the oil is hot add the chopped onions and fry till it turns translucent.
  • Once the onions are fried add ginger garlic paste and fry till the raw smell is gone.
  • Now add the tomatoes and fry till they become soft.
  • Turn the flame to low and add all the spices; turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder.
  • Fry the masala well for some time. If the masala starts burning add a dash of water and fry.
  • Now add the cooked dal into the masala and add salt as per taste.
  • Give the dal a mix. Add water as required to adjust the consistency. If you want to have the dal with roti then keep it a little thick and if you want to have with rice then make it a little thin.
  • Turn the flame to medium and let the dal come to a boil. Keep stirring in between.
  • Add the chopped coriander leaves and juice of ½ a lime.
  • Mix and let the dal cook for 2 more minutes.
  • Serve the dal with roti or steamed rice with a tsp. of ghee on top, chopped onions and garnish with coriander leaves.
