Bottle Gourd (Lauki) Coconut Curry with Dried Prawns | Dudhi chi galnya bhaji | Traditional Konkani dish


Bottle gourd                                            1 medium, peeled and roughly chopped

Dried prawns                                         1/3 cup

Note: You can also add fresh prawns or clams if available

Freshly grated coconut                        1 cup

Onion                                                       1 medium roughly chopped

Dried red chillies                                   3

Black peppercorns                                10

Water                                                       2 glasses

Salt                                                            as required


  • Heat a kadai on medium flame. Add the chopped bottle gourd and dried prawns.
  • Add 1 ½  glass of water, cover it with a lid and let the bottle gourd cook through. It will take around 10-15 mins to cook. Keep checking in between and stir the vegetable.
  • Meanwhile in a blender jar, add coconut, onion, red chillies and pepper. Add water as required and grind it to a fine paste.
  • Coconut masala is now ready.
  • Check if the bottle gourd is cooked. If yes then add the ground masala into it along with ½ glass of water and salt.
  • Mix everything well and let the curry come to a boil.
  • Let the curry boil for 5 minutes.
  • Bottle gourd coconut curry with dried prawns is now ready. Enjoy it with rice kanji and mango pickle on the side.
